We are excited to announce that River Care Award 2021 is now open for nominations!

 

We are looking for River Care Community Champions that are doing tremendous efforts in enhancing, protecting and contributing to the positive impact towards waters and rivers. Everyone can nominate any River Care Community Champions you know, and we highly encourage you to nominate your own!

WHAT IS RIVER CARE AWARD?

​

River Care Award scheme is established to reward and recognise proactive NRCF grantees as well as other GEC’s community groups that are contributing towards sustainable RIVER CARE through their dedication to enhancing, protecting and contributing positive impact towards river basin management. The ultimate aim of the award is to raise awareness among the public and encourage the Malaysians to implement localised action plans or initiatives which are sustainable and able to protect as well as to mitigate river related issues.

WHY ENTER?

​

  • To recognise the local champions who implement best practices in river restoration, rehabilitation, monitoring and catchment management under the NRCF as well as GEC projects or programmes.

  • To showcase the diversity of ways that people are preserving and conserving our rivers.

  • To raise awareness and encourage people’s responsibility towards the river.

​

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENTER?

 

Entries are open to all the NRCF recipients from Cycle 1 - 6 as well to other community groups who have collaborated with GEC.

​

Criteria of Participation

 

  1. Candidates that participate in the award must be Malaysian. Candidates are considered qualified if they are either grantees of NRCF 1 to 6 or other community groups currently or previously established, partnered, collaborated with GEC programmes or projects. The target activities are as follow:

    - River protection, restoration or rehabilitation
         > Efforts to show their concerns on river care.
         > Efforts to preserve or protect the river including the source

    - River adoption or monitoring
         > River protection and conservation or restoration of riparian area
         > River audit or pollution monitoring and mapping

    - Water Quality enhancement
         > Efforts to improve water quality of the river though Nature Based Solution
         > Pollution reduction
         > River clean up            

    - Riverine biodiversity conservation
         > Habitat creation and biodiversity monitoring

    - Education
         > Outreach & Education
         > Sharing & Teaching

    - Best Management Practices for pollution reduction
         > Zero waste concept
         > Recycling, composting or upcycling

    - Enhance river/reserve usage
         > Recreational activities
         > River (community) garden
         > Eco-Trails

    - Socio–Economic Empowerment through Environment Protection
         > Food source or alternative income
         > Nursery, seedlings and nursery products
         > Upcycling initiatives

     

  2. For the other community groups (non-NRCF grantees but formerly work directly or in partnership/collaboration with GEC), the latest contribution will be given priority for the assessment.
     

  3. Candidates/Nominees must fill in the official nomination form and submit by 13 Aug  2021, or else will not be accepted. (Candidates are required to attach relevant paper works/document and a video for evaluation)
     

  4. Only those completed nomination form that adhered to the criteria of award will be considered.

AWARD PRIZES

​

Winners will receive the following prizes*:

  • Champion: RM 5,000 + Trophy + Certificate

  • First Runner-up: RM 3,000 + Trophy + Certificate

  • Second Runner-up: RM 1,000 + Trophy + Certificate

  • 2 x Consolation award: RM 500 + Trophy + Certificate

 

In addition to the prizes, the winners will be given recognition and visibility as follows:

  • Individually acknowledged on GEC social media platforms.

  • Documented on the NRCF website where their contribution and achievements will be detailed on the River Champions webpage.

  • Individually featured or interviewed in the local newspaper (print and online)

*NOTE: 80% of the award money must be channeled to run the river care activity

​

THE JUDGING PROCEDURE

​

Assessment of this award will be evaluated by the panel of judges.

 

Evaluation will be conducted in three (3) stages:

  • Preliminary Stage: Nomination Form pre-screening by Secretariat (GEC)

  • Stage 1: Nomination Form and video assessment by panel of judges

  • Stage 2: If deemed necessary, the panel of judges will conduct interview session (online) or site visit (where necessary) for top two or three nominees (with minimum score of 70).

​

Applications are to be submitted via online form . Alternatively, you can download the form and submit via email to ummi@gec.org.my. All nominations must reach GEC no later than 13 August 2021.

AWARD TIMELINE

​

  • Nomination: 5 July – 13 August 2021 

  • Screening and Evaluation: August - September 2021

  • Award announcement/ presentation: 26 September 2021 (In conjunction with World Rivers Day)
