Project Title:

Art for Nature: Preserving Sungai Congkak

through Creative Expression

​

Key Activities:

Applying arts into river care awareness initiatives: 
 

  • Organised “Introduction to Art for Nature: Preserving Sungai Congkak through Creative Expression" workshop at IDRISSI International School 

  • Art for Nature activities:

    • Nature Photography Activity Along the Riverbank.

    • Guided tour at Sungai Congkak with IIUM researchers and students as well as school children and teachers from IDRISSI International School. 

    • Journaling and art creation inspired by nature after the guided tour.

  • Hosted a public exhibition displaying the children's artwork

Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Monash University Malaysia Student Chapter

Location:

Sungai Lembing Town, Pahang

​

Project Title:

Eco-Buffers: Building Natural Defences

Against Flooding in Sungai Lembing Town.

​

Key Output:

  • Planted 35 suitable bamboo trees which act as natural buffers for the river.

    • A total of 25 Monash University students and 10 local community members from Kampung Seberang, Jeram Takar & Kampung Kolong Pahat involved in the planting activity. 

  • Installed one educational signboard “Kita Jaga Sungai Kita” near Sungai Lembing river bank and produced one promotional banner.

Kawasan Rukun Tetangga Taman Pengkalan Barat

Sungai Kinta in Taman Pengkalan Barat, Perak

Project Title:

Projek Pemantauan Paras Air Sungai Kinta

Untuk Persediaan Menghadapi Banjir​

(Water Level Monitoring in Preparation for Floods)

​

Key Activities:

A community-based initiative focusing on flood preparedness:
 

  • Community-based river monitoring and clean up:

    • Monitor Sungai Kinta water level on regular basis with 17 local community members.

    • Conducted several rubbish monitoring activities.

    • Organised 3 clean up activities at the riverbank.

  • Reporting to relevant authorities:

    • Reported to Department of Drainage & Irrigation (DID) Kinta regarding Sungai Kinta's condition regarding the water level and rubbish piles.

Microplastic Research Interest Group (MRIG), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu

Location:

Ibai River in Kuala Terengganu,

Terengganu

Project Title:

Ripples of Change: Inspiring Youth

to Protect Ibai River.

​

Key Output:

Focus on plastic wastes found in Ibai River:
 

  • 23 volunteers and facilitators engaged in collecting plastic wastes along the riverbank.

  • Youth empowerment:
    15 students learned about water quality and microplastic sampling techniques including bulk sieving method and the use of YSI Hydrolab. 

  • Pollution mapping:
    23 volunteers and facilitators engaged in collecting and mapping plastic wastes along the river. The process involved recording the type, colour and size (meso and macro) of plastics using horizontal transect plots.

Pengajian Kejuruteraan Awam, Universiti Teknologi Mara Johor, Kampus Pasir Gudang

Location:

Pasir Gudang, Johor

(Sungai Daeng, Sungai Serai and Sungai Kopok)

Project Title:

Jelajah Sungai Johor: Pentingnya Menjaga Sungai

​

Key Activities:

  • Organised 2 exploration series with 15 students at Sungai Daeng and Sungai Kopok. 

  • Water and waste audit:

    • Collected water sampling at each Sg Daeng and Kopok, each at 5 sampling points. 

    • Conducted trash profiling collected along the Sg Daeng and Kopok.

  • An awareness programme module was developed and applied during Water Awareness Programme, organised on 10 May 2025, participated by 42 members of Kg Perigi Acheh and 56 students of SK Perigi Acheh.

Project Title:

Sayangilah Sungai Kita

(Love Our Rivers)

​

Key Output:

Organise community-based river care initiatives:
 

  • River clean-up

    • ​Organised project launching with 100 participants, followed by ‘gotong-royong’ activity.

    • Organised three ‘gotong-royong’ activities (in Jan and Feb, 2025) with a total of 130 community members.

Sungai Penchala in Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Project Title:

Little Avengers: Tale of a River Protector

​

Key Output:

  • Developed and disseminated a river care e-book entitled Little Avengers to raise awareness among children. 

  • Engaged school children in river care awareness activities i.e. art competition. 

  • More than 150 people has downloaded the e-book at the time of Final Report writing. 
     

National River Care Fund (NRCF) is an initiative by the Global Environment Centre (GEC),

overseen by the Advisory Committee and operated by the NRCF Secretariat from GEC.
