Project Title:
Preliminary Urban River Restoration: Sungai Pantai @ Universiti Malaya

Project Output:
40 campus communities successfully cleaned up the river and collected a total of 217.5 KG of wastes (9.5 KG of it was recyclable wastes). The students also recorded biodiversity of Sungai Pantai which is made accessible (via iNaturalist) as database for further studies by others. They also creatively held photo exhibition by the river, which attracted 50 students to visit, and increased awareness on river care.

Outreach Programme @ Sg. Garamatoi Tagal System, Papar, Sabah

Project Output:
The project engaged Tagal Committee of Garamatoi River in Papar, Sabah. Data sampling conducted shows that the river is in Class 1 (healthy) according to the Malaysia Interim National Water Quality (INWQS). To keep it that way, a total of 16 villagers were trained to conduct water sampling and aquatic insects sampling independently using bio indicators to monitor the river. They also organized Friends of River Programme and raised awareness among 40 villagers on the importance of clean river and river care.

The Blue Veins Project

Project Output:
The project focused on raising awareness via online campaign on the importance of clean river and how the public can help. The students of New Media and Contentpreneurship from UiTM Alor Gajah developed various creative content to promote the beauty of rivers in Malaysia as well as what people can do to stop river pollution. They used online platforms including website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Results shows 803,000 reach on Facebook, 4,900 reach on Twitter and more than 400 page views on website within 3 weeks.

Project Output:
SMK Seri Aman Kota Tinggi has been adopting a stream nearby the school sourced from the rainwater, spring water and wastewater since 2012. Under NRCF, they upgraded the physical condition of the stream and outreach to larger community members. In 1 year, they successfully built dams to separate water source, planted duckweeds and Water Hyacinths and built railing and bridges along the stream. The upgraded stream was also used for hands-on learning amongst the students as part of their environmental awareness outreach activities including awareness campaigns, information centre, wastewater treatment and water quality, and bio-indicator monitoring.

River Care Protection – Islamic Perspective

Project Output:
The project committee successfully organised “International Seminar on Islam and Green Technology (iGreen 2017)” attended by 250 participants. They have successfully developed and published a module of “Islam and River Care”. YB Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) launched the module on 3 December 2019 during International Seminar on Islam and Ecological Sustainability. They also produced the module in video version.

Project Title:
Extension of Outreach Programme: Capacity Building and Awareness Creation On Environmental BMP

Project Output:
Students and teachers hands-on learned about environmental Best Management Practices including recycle and upcycle implementation, waste management, waste to wealth concept, river care activities and methods, aquatic ecosystem and more. As a result, they were able to conduct various activities such as implementing recycling activity at YCK’s centre, river monitoring, fieldwork, publishing articles, and producing documentary and short film entitled Reclaiming Our Heritage: The Social Life of the Gombak River (won Special Merit Award at KLEFF 2018) as well as knowledge transfer to other beneficiaries. YCK’s effort in leaving green footprint is still active until today.

Project Output:
A stretch of Klang River suffered from land erosion due to rapid water flow from the nearby field. The KRT took initiative under the NRCF to prevent the erosion at the riverbank via planting trees along the river. They also made organic compost fertilizers for the planted trees. To ensure the river water quality is continuously in good condition, the KRT members conducted river monitoring on a regular basis by training other members on the methods as well.

Environmental Sustainability Programme “Community Role on River Health”

UMK and GEC collaborated to conduct a 1-day programme empowering 80 local students in raising awareness on the importance of healthy rivers and imparting knowledge on river clean up and river water quality and monitoring.
